Altered Carbon Preview: “Clash By Night”

[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Reminder: I’m previewing the episodes one at a time since (for now) we only have the one season and we’ve already waited a while for it. You can catch my previews for Episodes 1-7 here.

After a detour into the land of what was in “Nora Inu,” Kovacs returns to the land of what is, and learns his sister is their father’s daughter while he is most definitely their mother’s son.

Rei (Diechen Lachman) tells her brother everything about how she survived, and how far her reach now extends, and it’s a lot to take in. She offers him a Sophie’s Choice, which requires him burn down new bridges to rebuild the old ones, and dial back the strides he’d recently made on being more human.

That includes being a complete dick to Ortega, who smells a setup and starts digging, with help from Mickey (Buffy‘s Warren, Adam Busch). While she’s doing that, Kovacs goes home to the Raven, accompanied by a very special guest, and with Poe’s help, they try a workaround.

Kovacs also has to make overtures toward solving the Bancroft case, and he comes up with a hell of a story that works twofold to burn down someone else. It’s all bullshit, but it’s really, really convincing.

And then Kovacs second guesses himself and wants to get to the bottom of what actually happened to Mary Lou and Bancroft. He’s apart from Ortega for all of that, though, and she finds herself in yet another cage match, where that shiny new arm is again pretty damn handy.

I liked this episode because it flipped everything Kovacs thought he knew on his ear, but still wished for more of him onscreen with Ortega. They’re completely capable on their own. I just dig them together, and with two episodes left, every moment counts.

Altered Carbon‘s first season is available now on Netflix.
