[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Everybody’s favorite devil drops into Fargo this week as Gloria wings her way to L.A., much to the chagrin of her new boss, to find out who Ennis was before he landed in Minnesota.

That journey has her crossing paths with the fabulous Ray Wise (onscreen later this month in the Showtime revival of Twin Peaks) as a fellow weary traveler and an assortment of Los Angelenos who have varying interest in helping her.

The action is intercut with passages from one of the books Gloria found and flashbacks to 1975 when Ennis was Thaddeus Mobley. We pick up with him in the days following his science fiction award, as he falls in with film producer Howard Zimmerman and actress Vivian Lord, who put him on a different path. We don’t see either of the Stussy brothers this hour, so that arc is left alone.

The casting is fun here, even if the story itself is wistful and dark. In addition to Wise, mother-daughter duo Frances Fisher and Francesa Eastwood (Heroes Reborn) play 2010 and 1975 versions of Vivian. Thomas Mann (Kong: Skull Island) is Thaddeus, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Rob McElhenney is an L.A. cop who’s less-than-helpful to Gloria, and Lady Dynamite‘s Fred Melamed is Howard.
