Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief [Preview]

This documentary will scare you; if it doesn’t, you aren’t paying attention.

The power of belief can lead to all kinds of actions and outcomes — some good, some bad. We’ve personally always thought of Scientology as a cult. We get that what draws people into this world is the promise of help and the promise of improving your life. People are told Scientology will help them get their true heart’s desire. And part of the appeal, which later can be used as blackmail, are the auditing sessions. These “therapy” sessions are required and every member is encouraged to unburden themselves, tell their deepest and darkest secrets and desires. Sure, you might feel better talking through your issues, but that information is recorded and stored away and often used as blackmail to keep former Scientologists quiet.

So why is this documentary coming out now? Because a handful of people were tired of the lies and the harassment they’ve suffered at the hands of this “religion.” We get an inside look at how they were indoctrinated and what made them lose their faith.

Based on the book by Pulitzer Prize winner Lawrence Wright, Going Clear, profiles eight former members of the Church of Scientology, whose most prominent adherents include A-list Hollywood celebrities. Academy Award-winning director Alex Gibney shines a light on how the church cultivates true believers, detailing their experiences and what they are willing to do in the name of religion.

This powerful documentary highlights the Church’s origins, from its roots in the mind of founder L. Ron Hubbard to its rise in popularity in Hollywood and beyond. The heart of Going Clear is a series of shocking revelations by former insiders, including high-ranking and recognizable members such as acclaimed screenwriter Paul Haggis, who describe the systematic history of abuse and betrayal by Church officials, including the current leadership of the Church. Going Clear is a provocative tale of ego, exploitation and lust for power.

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief premieres Sunday, March 29th at 8/7c on HBO.
