[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

UP Television launches its 2015 movies with A Girl’s Best Friend, a sweet family friendly movie (with a few sad moments thrown in–heads up for your younger viewers) about an unlikely friendship between a young girl and a bloodhound K-9 officer. James Denton, who we’ll soon see in Hallmark Channel’s Good Witch series, stars opposite Lilah Fitzgerald (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce and When Calls the Heart) and Haven‘s Laura Mennell.

Here’s the logline: Penelope “Polka Dot” Daught (Fitzgerald) is a precocious 12-year-old who identifies with Huckleberry Finn’s predicament in Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” With her single mother, Frances (Kirsten Robek from Hell on Wheels), struggling with chronic illness and tight finances, Polka Dot is pushed into looking for odd jobs after school for extra cash. While sweeping up around the neighborhood coffee shop, she meets K-9 unit police officer Cooper “Coop” Brawn (Denton) and his trusty bloodhound, Luey. She talks her way into the police kennel, and into a part-time job taking care of Luey, giving Coop time to rekindle his romance with his ex-fiancé, Samantha (Mennell). When Polka Dot’s mom takes a turn, it’s up to Coop and Luey to step in and help.
