[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Back in ye olden days, Syfy (then SciFi) was a reliable destination for blow-out, no hold barred, mini-series extravaganzas–see Steven Spielberg’s Taken–20 hours that spanned decades and was so, so good, Battlestar Galactica (before it was ever a series), and more recently, Tin Man and Alice, which I believe was the last new one five years ago.

I’ve missed them. They were always timed with the fall-off in network programming and were a good getaway quick-immersion experience. When Ascension was announced, I was excited a) for the return of the mini-series and b) the cast, because the Montreal shoot promised some Canadian goodness on top of American leads Brian Van Holt (Cougar Town) and Tricia Helfer (BSG). They’re joined by Andrea Roth, Gil Bellows, The Listener‘s Lauren Lee Smith and Continuum‘s Ryan Robbins and Rachael Crawford, to name a few familiar faces, as well as Al Sapienza, (Person of Interest), Brandon Bell (Hollywood Heights), and relative newcomers Tiffany Lonsdale,  Jacqueline Byers, and P.J. Boudousqué.

Set to run over three nights, Ascension is a return to BSG territory with a story set in space. We haven’t pre-screened it, so I have no spoilers for you, but here’s what to expect: In 1963, the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage aboard the starship Ascension to populate a new world. Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, a mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship’s population to question the true nature of their mission.
