[Warning: General spoilers ahead.]

Teri Polo has been a great fit for the Hallmark networks in recent years, headlining several of their films, and Sunday night, her newest movie for Hallmark Channel, The Christmas Shepherd, premieres. It is a lovely story that hits close to home for animal lovers, and especially anyone who’s been through the emotional trauma of having a family pet go missing, and having to track them down.

Polo plays Sally, a successful children’s book author whose constant companion since the sudden death of her Army Veteran husband is Buddy, a five-year old German Shepherd he brought home from a deployment. When Buddy gets out in a storm, she races to find him, only to discover days later that he was found safe and re-homed, with widower Mark (Martin Cummins) and his teenage daughter, Emma. The film follows them as they navigate the best balance for all of them, including Buddy.

It’s so well done, and so heartfelt. Everybody involved is just really, really kind, and that’s so nice to watch, especially this time of year. There’s no bitterness and ugliness, only a determination to be fair and loving. If animals are a part of your family, you will have your heart in your throat for a handful of scenes. And, because this is Hallmark, there’s also a little romance in the mix as Sally and Mark find they have a lot in common, and Buddy does what he can to make sure they don’t miss that.

I loved this movie. It’s sweet, and funny, and full of hope. I was so happy to see Martin Cummins play a solidly good guy. He is great with Polo, and Jordyn Ashley Olson, who plays his daughter. If you missed our interview with him, you can catch it here.
