Tomorrow night, Hallmark Movie Channel premieres an original film based on a heartbreaking, and heart-healing true story. The Color of Rain, starring Lacey Chabert and Warren Christie, tells the story of Gina Kell and Michael Spehn, who struck up a friendship when both were widowed within months of each other. Bonded by the friendship of their respective children, who were classmates, and their shared bewilderment, loss, and single parenthood, they fell in love and blended their families.

The film follows Michael and Gina in the days after they lose their spouses. Michael, prompted by his wife, Cathy, before her death, reaches out to Gina in the days afterward as they both adjust to a new normal. While Cathy knew Gina’s husband, Matt, from college, Gina and Michael only knew each other in passing. Thanks to Cathy’s guiding hand, they strike up a friendship and find themselves falling in love with each other–as much to their own surprise as anyone else’s–and the varied reactions aren’t all kind, but Gina and Michael rise above it.

It’s a lovely, thoughtful film grounded in hope, and Chabert and Christie do really nice work, especially with the added challenge of playing real-life people who also happened to be on set in Vancouver for part of the shoot. It’s a family friendly outing that may start conversations about “what if” among younger viewers, and that’s OK.
