[Warning: Plot spoilers for the episode.]

The tangled web of the fifth season premiere gets even more twisty as we revisit old friends and enemies.

Raylan is called upon to bail out Loretta (Kaitlyn Dever), and gets a swanky new place to live, Boyd finds that his new Eastern European doctor acquaintance might be a challenge to deal with, the extended Crowes land on Dewey’s whorehouse, where Wade Messer (James Le Gros) is plotting something, and the Feds start sniffing around Sammy Tonin’s death.

We’re also introduced to a few more new players:

  • Wood Harris (Southland) and Steve Harris (The Practice) as a couple of weed runners for Arlo’s old pal, “Hot Rod” Dunham (Mickey Jones).
  • Amy Smart as Loretta’s social worker, whom Raylan’s piqued enough by to find a reason to be social with on his own.
  • Xander Berkeley as the Detroit mob money man, whom we meet when the Marshals take him into custody, and who I’d bet we’ll see again.

It’s a more leisurely (and less deadly) outing than the premiere, and Raylan’s trademark swagger is on display as he alternates between charming and downright dangerous–he waxes eloquent to Dunham about how easily he could take out four men before the first one unholsters, and he reiterates his policy of putting folks he’d rather not listen to in the trunk. It’s so good to have this show back.
