It was pretty much a given after Kristen Wiig received an Academy Award nomination for co-writing the comedy juggernaut Bridesmaids that she would wind down her seven-year run on Saturday Night Live this May. It wasn’t a given that they would bid her goodbye so very sweetly.
In the final sketch of the evening last night, she was announced as a new graduate (who was entering the convent) by host Mick Jagger. She sheepishly got up in her cap and gown and then took both off to reveal that she was dressed for something much more important, in a fetching light pink mini-skirt ensemble.
Guest band Arcade Fire started up “She’s a Rainbow” and she danced first with Jagger, and then one by one, her cast members, and even Lorne Michaels. Each one took their turns spinning her around and hugging her as the song changed to “Ruby Tuesday” and they were joined on stage by the band, the guest stars, and even SNL alumni Amy Poehler and Rachel Dratch–all singing along with her.
She held back tears the whole time, and I even got a little misty at home as I wondered whether anybody had ever been sent off this way (I think the answer is no, but comment me if there is a precedent). The video’s above if you missed it. It’s a lovely five minutes.
