Tina’s 2011 TV Goodness All-Stars: Supernatural’s Misha Collins

When coming up with a list of all-stars this year, I had to include Misha Collins from Supernatural for several reasons.

  • One of my favorite Supernatural episodes of 2011 was “The Man Who Would Be King.” It finally explained what in the heavens was going on with Cas all season long. Written by Ben Edlund, this hour of TV was heartbreaking in so many ways. The last two scenes alone were worth the price of admission. Collins was wonderful in the episode as Cas went down a dark path that led to his break from Team Free Will. It was an engrossing, painful, well-done episode on all levels. One of the top 3 of Season 6.
  • After the end of Season 6, it was announced that Misha would no longer be a series regular on Supernatural. I knew he was popular with many of the show’s fans but the outrage after the announcement was loud and passionate. For months and months his fans stayed vocal, especially after Cas was “killed” off in “Hello, Cruel World”. Recently, it was announced Misha would be back in episode 17 and possibly a couple more after that. Needless to say, it was good to finally get confirmation on when he’d be returning to the show.
  • In 2011, Misha tapped into his considerable fan base in two very different ways. His Hope to Haiti Project galvanized a group of his fans to raise money to build a community center in Jacmel, one of the towns in Haiti that was completely brutalized by the earthquake that caused much devastation in 2010. Not only did his fans raise donations but they were able to go to Jacmel and help construct the center.
  • Another one of the ways he helped raise money for charity was decidedly crazier. This fall, Collins decided to cause a frenzy by initiating what came to be known as GISHWHES or the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen. I can’t even explain what this is other than 6,000 of his Minions joined and the winning team gets to have dinner with Collins in Rome where one of Supernatural’s conventions takes place. At 10 bucks an entry, a charity was helped, fans got to bond with other fans, and it’ll probably break the Guinness Book of World Records for largest scavenger hunt.

As for 2012, not only will Misha return to Supernatural, he’ll also appear in another CW series. He has a guest spot in an upcoming episode of Ringer, a show that stars Sarah Michelle Gellar. So that’s definitely something to look forward to in the new year.

Supernatural returns with new episodes Friday January, 6, 2012 at 9/8c on the CW.
