It’s Complicated: Booth Doesn’t Want to Talk About His Dad on Bones “The Male in the Mail”

One thing that I know about Seeley Booth is that he doesn’t really want to talk. He never brings up personal matters at work. He’s a private guy and maybe he doesn’t want everyone at the lab to know every detail of his personal life. So after Pops delivers the news that Booth’s dad is dead, Brennan’s at a loss for how to help him deal. At first she adopts his matter-of-fact attitude, but that doesn’t stop her from bringing it up in front of Camille. Brennan’s at such a loss for how to help him that she turns to Angela for advice. It was nice to see her put her usual icy reserve aside to help the man she loves and, ultimately, Brennan knows what to do to comfort Booth.

What’s also interesting here is that Booth’s unwillingness to talk about his father’s death really affects Pops. Because Booth’s unable to look past his own pain (or visible lack thereof), to see how his father’s death is affecting Pops. Pops isn’t doing so well. Even though Booth never considered his father a real dad, Pops is still mourning the loss of his son. And while he thinks it might be difficult for Booth to get closure on this, he wants Booth to have a box his father gave him and listen to a letter he wrote to Pops. Knowing what we know about Booth’s difficult childhood, I’m proud of Booth for even listening as Pops reads the letter. I can’t say what’s right for Booth – whether he should forgive his father, make peace with what his father put him through – but it’s hard to see Booth so closed off about this. It’s nice that it’s Brennan who encourages Booth to open that box. And what he finds there helps him feel something about his father’s passing. And maybe it’ll even help him achieve some closure. In the meantime, it’s refreshing to see Brennan trying to be there for Booth, like he’ll always be there for her.

My only (minor) complaints about the episode:

  • I would’ve loved to see a little more of Booth dealing with Pops and his father’s death. I thought this week’s case was interesting, but nowhere near as important as what was going on in Booth’s personal life.
  • More of Tina Majorino‘s Agent Shaw please. How cute is her new hair? I love that she hero worships Booth and I’d love to see her back as soon as possible.

Bones airs Thursdays at 9/8c on Fox.
