Guest Star Goodness

Guest Star Goodness: Castle “The Final Nail”

“The Final Nail” didn’t only provide some great character development for Richard Castle, it also featured some great guest stars.

Jason Wiles (Damian Westlake) — Jason played Castle’s mentor from his boarding school days. Damian was this spoiled rich guy who, in the end, was responsible for the murder of his father. He ordered the killing so he could inherit all the money. And he squandered all that money away. Funny thing is, if someone didn’t murder his wife, he would have gotten away with the crime for the rest of his life.

Wiles is best known (at least to me) for two roles: 1) The screwed up drug addict Colin Robbins who was the worst kind of influence on Kelly Taylor’s life on FOX’s Beverly Hills 90210; and 2) Bosco, a screwed up detective on NBC’s Third Watch. Last year, he was also on a great episode of CBS’ Criminal Minds (“The Fight”); he recently guest-starred on ABC’s No Ordinary Family; and was a regular on the 2010 summer series, NBC’s Persons Unknown.

Alicia Coppola

Alicia Coppola (Amber Patinelli): I made her for the one to kill Damian’s wife as soon as I saw her. I just knew you couldn’t have Alicia, who in my opinion is a big guest star, one who often plays villains, and not have her be the one to do the deed. She gave me chills when Amber told Beckett how she begged Victoria Westlake to stay away from her man and Victoria said, “No.” That refusal caused Amber to snap.

Alicia has starred in so many shows over the years. I first noticed her when she played the fierce, feisty and thoroughly messed up Lorna Devon on the late great NBC soap opera, Another World. But, her post daytime career has been a successful one. She starred in the short-lived series Bull on TNT andJericho on CBS; guest-starred on JAG and NCIS as Lt. Cmdr. Faith Coleman; and recently appeared on NCIS: Los Angeles as a completely different character. I love Alicia so I hope she gets another TV show sooner rather than later.

Tom Irwin

Tom Irwin (Simon Campbell): He was Victoria Westlake’s ex-husband and Amber’s boyfriend. Yet, Simon and Victoria were talking about getting back together. Busy guy.

How can you ever forget the dad from My So-Called Life? He will forever be awesome simply for being Angela’s father, Graham Chase, on this very show. But, the guy has been in everything under the sun when it comes to guest-star spots on TV series including: Lost, 24 and Grey’s Anatomy. He’s played priests on two shows: a one-off episode of Private Practice and a considerably bigger role on USA Network’s Saving Grace. Irwin is always a welcome presence on any show.

Ethan Phllips

Ethan Phillips (James Farnham): He was an appraiser that was questioned about the case and a certain 11-carat engagement ring.

Phillips is a veteran character actor who has been in many shows over the years. But his most notable roles are as Pete Downey on the 80s sitcom Benson; and as Neelix, the Cook/Morale Officer/Ambassador on Star Trek: Voyager. Most recently, he’s guest-starred on a whole slew of series including Bones, The Middle and Rizzoli & Isles.
